Manipur Violence Live Updates: A day after a video of two women from the Kuki-Zomi community being paraded naked and sexually assaulted in Manipur surfaced, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that his government will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment. The police have registered a case of kidnapping, gang rape, and murder at the Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district against unknown armed individuals and has arrested a person as well.

How has the country reacted? The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with the Opposition mounting pressure on the BJP-ruled Centre demanding a detailed discussion on the situation in Manipur. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi describing the assault as “shameful” and called on state governments to ensure women’s safety. “Any civil society should be ashamed by it,” PM Modi said ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament. The Supreme Court, too, expressed “deep concern” and asked the state and Central governments to apprise it of the action taken to bring the perpetrators to book. The apex court added that it will step in if nothing is happening on the ground. Uproar was also seen in both houses of the Parliament over the issue, with the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha being adjourned for the day.
