Who was Altina Schinasi? Google Doodle celebrates iconic designer behind one of fashion's more eye-opening looks

 ABOUT POST

Who was Altina Schinasi?

Altina Schinasi was an innovative visionary who broke barriers in the world of art.

Throughout her lifetime she was a filmmaker, sculptor, entrepreneur, window dresser, designer and artist.

She is best known for inventing and designing the popular 'cat-eye' glasses that are still prevalent in the fashion world today.

She wanted more fashionable options for women and the glasses intended to convey whimsy, mystery and romance.

Despite setbacks, they became a fashion staple for women around the world.

She worked with famous artists and activists during her time such as Salvador Dali and Martin Luther King Jr.

Schinasi was married four times: first to architect Morris Sanders, second to Viennese doctor Eric Barrett, then to political scientist Charles Carey (Hence why she is also known as Altina Carey), and finally to Cuban artist Celestino Miranda.

She had two sons: Denis and Terry, who both grew up to be filmmakers and win Academy Awards.
